Listening and Presence

Listening and Presence.

Learn to minister with compassion through active listening and a calm, prayerful presence.
This module invites you to cultivate the gift of attentive presence in pastoral care. Through the wisdom of Scripture, you’ll learn how to listen deeply—without rushing to fix, respond, or defend. James 1 reminds us to be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger. Proverbs warns against answering before hearing. In a noisy world, Spirit-led listening becomes a healing balm—opening space for others to feel truly seen and heard. You will explore how to reflect understanding, sit with others in silence, and respond with humility and grace. As Job’s friends initially did, presence itself can minister even when words fail. Whether rejoicing or weeping with those in need, your ability to listen with the heart of Christ will bring peace, restoration, and depth to every pastoral encounter.

Learning Objectives

Attentive listening is a foundational skill for pastoral ministry. This objective develops the capacity to hear the heart behind the words, discerning unspoken needs and responding with wisdom. Learners will cultivate active listening techniques, empathetic responses, and discernment in conversations, enabling them to minister more effectively in both formal counseling and everyday pastoral interactions.
  • Practice active listening in pastoral interactions.
  • Reflect back understanding to promote healing conversations.
